Linfield College’s Adult Degree Program Plays its Part in the Growing Demand for Higher Education Online

McMinnville, Ore. – September 29, 2010 – Linfield College’s Adult Degree Program, the education program offering adults the opportunity to earn bachelor’s degrees and certificates online, announces their expansion to support the growing enrollment and demand of online college programs. This month, US News & World Report reported that since 2001 enrollment in online programs has increased by 832 percent to more than two million students in 2009. This shows the growing demand for accredited college online programs, as adults look to advance their education. 

Linfield College’s Adult Degree Program has played its part, supporting the growth of online education, offering five accredited online degrees and three accredited online certificate programs. These programs are designed for the growing number of students seeking to earn a degree or certificate at a later stage in life, while demanding the flexibility to balance work, family and education.  

Online education is not a new concept, but it is a change for many used to the in-class learning environment. Though classes are entirely online, Linfield still emphasizes professor-to-student and student-to-student interaction. Through online group discussions, message boards and e-mails, communication and social interaction are keys to learning and earning your degree.  

“In my experience as a professor of online courses, I have found that students openly share thoughts and opinions online more readily than they do in person, often making relationships richer,” said Kimberly Steele, who teaches online marketing courses at Linfield College. “As the world is increasingly going global, the ability to interact with others in a virtual space is invaluable.”  

The importance and impact of the professor in online courses is essential for students’ success. Though learning doesn’t take place in a physical classroom environment with the professor present, Linfield instructors understand their role in educating their students and making the online education experience come alive.  

“As a professor in an online environment it is our role to help students to discern the issues, clarify the problems, find the bottom-line thesis and then give the student the opportunity to respond,” said Dr. William Millar, Department Chair of Religious Studies at Linfield College. “Courses may be designed to gain experiences through online reading and writing, but I encourage my students to always contact me with questions.”
